VALLE DEI VITELLI Integral

“The canyon of the twelve arches”, this is the name given by those who discovered it and descended it for the first time a few years ago. No swimming or jumping, a unique canyon of its kind for its particular beauty.

The water flow is highly variable, determined by the season, the temperatures and therefore by the melting waters. The “entrance door” is a thin crack in the hard limestone rocks worked by the flow of glacial waters. The walls are close together, almost touching, leaving only a little space for passage. Small “marmitte”, channels, arches of smooth and compact rock characterize the first part. Here the lamp is a must.

Short rope rappel follow one another at flat stretches with sometimes narrow and semi-submerged passages to then open up completely in the second part of the gorge. It comes out after about 4 hours near the road bridge.

Approach 1 hour. Return 5 minutes.

The approach takes place along a path up to the wooden bridge, near a place where you can see the “marmitte dei giganti”, deep depressions created by river erosion and in particular by the great speed and pressure of the melting water from the glaciers above.

Gorge is more open than the upper part of the canyon. Full of natural stone arches and rappels on beautiful waterfalls. The exit is after more or less 2 hours near the bridge on the famous road to the Stelvio Pass.

Excellent canyon to continue discovering the natural wonders of these almost inaccessible places.

Good entry level Canyon.

Approach 20 minutes. Return 5 minutes.

VALLE DEI VITELLI Upper Part

This Canyon is situated on the way to Stelvio Pass.

The approach consists in going up the initial part of the Valle dei Vitelli first along the path and then along some tracks. Along the way is possible to see some relics of the passage of the White War that bring back memories of ancient battles.

There is no shortage of native fauna and flora! Ibexes, marmots and flowers of various species make you feel the uncontaminated nature of this corner of the Stelvio National Park.

Small potholes, channels, arches of smooth and compact rock characterize the first part. Here the headlamp is a must.

Short rappels follow one another in flat stretches with sometimes narrow and semi-submerged passages to then open up between one section and another. It comes out after about 2 hours near the wooden bridge which marks the beginning of the lower part.

Perfect canyon to start getting familiar with this activity. Fascinating and special environment!
